Fraser walk directions

Summary

This walk offers extensive off leash opportunities, stunning city and mountain views and starts and ends at a fantastic dog friendly café. The first and last sections are on leash on footpaths, but more than half of the walk is off leash through the Mt Rogers nature reserve along a wide dirt track. There are expansive views from the nature reserve to the Gungahlin and Belconnen town centres and west to the Brindabella Mountains. Some up hill walking is required for the first 800 metres or so to reach the nature reserve, but the dirt track around the hill is mainly flat with only some gently undulations. Perhaps because the reserve is surrounded by suburbs, kangaroos are rarely seen here. Our suggested route starts and ends at the little Fraser shops, totals around 4.5 km and will take up to 90 minutes. However, you can shorten the walk and miss the up hill section completely if you start and end the walk at the Mt Rogers car park at the end of Wickens Place, Fraser (see directions 4 to 6 below).

Directions

Fraser shops to Mt Rogers car park (15 minutes)

1. Start at the car park at the little Fraser shops off Daley Crescent.
The Fraser shops consists of a café, Indian restaurant and pizza joint (the little supermarket is closed). We can highly recommend the Fraser Café which has several outdoor tables and great food. The friendly owner also owns the Indian restaurant and he will happily unlock the restaurant to let you use the toilets inside.
2. With your back to the car park and facing the shops, take the footpath passing on the left of the shops, follow it past and behind the shops, through a grassy area and then to a road (Lind Close). Follow Lind Close straight ahead a very short distance then take the first turn left.
3. Shortly after turning left, look for a footpath on the right passing between the houses. Take this footpath then veer left to connect to another footpath heading up hill through a narrow park.
4. Continue walking up hill following this footpath, keeping the back of the houses on your left. After approximately 10-15 minutes, the footpath will end and you'll see a small car park up ahead on the left.
Off leash opportunity starts here and continues for the entire loop around Mt Rogers. However we prefer to keep our dogs on leash until we pass the car park.
This is the Mt Rogers car park, and where you can start/end the walk if you prefer a shorter route without the up hill walk from the Fraser shops.
There is a bin next to the car park at the far end.

Mt Rogers loop (40 minutes)

5. Continue following the wide dirt track past the car park. As you pass the car park, ignore another wide track veering right and up hill.
6. Continue following this wide dirt track which essentially loops around the Mt Rogers peak, for between 30 and 40 minutes until you see the car park up ahead again.
This loop track provides wonderful views at various points across Gunghalin, Belconnen and Canberra's western mountain ranges.
There are plenty of open, grassy spaces between the track and the back fences of houses on your left for dogs to have a wander or play. On your right are numerous smaller tracks heading up hill into denser bush which you may wish to explore. Some of these tracks lead to the Mt Rogers summit.

Mt Rogers car park to the Fraser shops (15 minutes)

7. When you see the car park again up ahead, veer left to rejoin the paved footpath which you used to reach the reserve.
Off leash opportunity ends at the footpath.
8. Continue walking to the right (ignoring the footpath branching down hill to the left) towards the yellow trig posts, and then down hill on the footpath, retracing your earlier route back to the shops.
You'll know when to turn right onto the other footpath to Lind Close when you can see Tillyard Drive just ahead of you.
